With so many friends out of work because of the government shutdown, it was hard to feel like I should be working the last 17 days–but I did, a lot.
While I worked, strange things were going on. A heavily-used road closed because it’s in a national park. Congresspeople staged nutty political theater at closed monuments. The best free entertainment in town, the Smithsonian, was closed.
Yesterday morning when I sat down to write my next essay for the blog Last Word on Nothing, I thought I was going to be writing about this meteor that blazed by on Monday, and I missed it, but social media told me about it anyway, and isn’t the world interesting these days.
So I was pretty surprised when the essay took itself off in a completely different direction. I guess the shutdown was the main thing on my mind.
