Yeah, I know what you’ve heard. The forgetting, the slowing down. When you grow old, your brain can’t do everything it used to. But that’s not the whole story. There are plenty of psychological benefits to getting older. I wrote about some of them in the July issue of Smithsonian.
Also in that issue: a wonderful story by Christie Aschwanden about doping in sports. With the Olympics coming, this is a topic we’re going to be hearing a lot about in a few weeks. Interesting thing I learned from Christie’s story: thousands of athletes will be tested immediately after competition at the Olympics. But that’s kind of silly, because doping is usually done during training, not during competition.
