Today on the Ice

Chris the photographer and I have gotten three journals onto the website! Read them here. My main job while I’m on the ship is to write these. Chris goes around taking pictures all day, sometimes I follow him, sometimes I do other things, then every now and then we get together to talk about what he has and what we think could be the eight pictures for the day. Sometime after dinner we pick the eight and I write about them.

I’d heard horror stories of writers on past expeditions being up til 3 a.m. working on these, but I hope not to have to do that. Last night we were working until about 11:45, but only because we decided it would be a good idea to do two days in one, so we didn’t really start picking pictures for the second day until 9 or so.

About Helen Fields

I'm a freelance writer living in Washington, D.C. I like to knit, sing, dance, and write about science. Only one of these pays the bills. A few years ago I spent six weeks on an icebreaker in the Bering Sea and two months in Berlin on a journalism fellowship, and who knows - I could find some more adventures sometime.
